Negligent drivers are a common factor in many motor vehicle collisions. Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, texting while driving or driving while too tired are all examples of negligence. A New Jersey couple was recently killed in a car accident that may have been caused by a driver acting negligently.

Authorities stated that the van the victims were traveling in was in the jug handle of the road when the accident occurred. A driver in another vehicle that was traveling at a high rate of speed entered the jug handle, lost control and crashed into the victims’ van. The impact launched the van over the guardrail and down an embankment into a portion of Olympia Lakes.

Multiple rescue squads responded to the crash. Though crews worked to pull the couple out of the water, they were both later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The driver believed to be responsible was not injured. No charges against that driver have been filed at this time; however, the investigation is still ongoing to determine whether criminal behavior was responsible.

When a victim is injured in a car accident, he or she may be entitled to file a personal injury claim in civil court against any party or parties believed to be responsible. Similarly, surviving families of deceased victims may choose to file wrongful death claims on behalf of their loved ones. When these types of claims are successfully litigated, claimants may be awarded monetary damages that can be used to help pay medical bills, funeral costs and any other related expenses.
